It seems JJ has his hands tied behind his back on free agency until he settles an extension with BWJ

Possible. Although I have to think they have an idea of what the first couple years of a Witt extension would look like and how their budgets would work. At least I would hope so.

They need to get that extension done ASAP.

Yes. Because I have no life I have been going through cots contracts. Unless the Royals intend to increase their 26 man opening day payroll it looks like JJ has roughly 25M to spend on new and extended contracts. Ouch!

Bobby will still be relatively inexpensive this year, even with a new long-term deal. The commitment really starts to climb in 2025, which would be the first time he would be eligible for arbitration.

I haven’t done a deep dive into payroll of late, but there has to be some room. Especially given that most of the key guys have less than three years experience.

I’m not sure he had his hands tied behind his back, but it certainly would be easier to attract free agents if Witt gets signed to an extension.

Can’t disagree with that. They have to show a commitment to winning (I know, I know) and the best way—and probably the only way—to do that is to tie up Witt long term.
