Agree 100 percent. This was a dumb move regardless of whether they trade Massey (and what are they going to get for him? A 29 year old AA reliever from the Braves?). If they want an impact lefty bat, sign Bellinger. But don’t waste money and block the development of your young players by doing this.
And don’t get me started on the idea of trading for a closer. They should be trading for prospects who can become a closer in 2 years.
Nothing but facts here, as far as I can tell. IMO, the only time you should trade for a closer is if you're in contention and need a bump at the deadline. I don't think they would, especially after turning down an offer for a potential frontline starter earlier this offseason, but if they trade Vinnie P for a closer, I will lose my mind.
Agree on when to trade for a closer. Wait and see how things go and if you somehow find yourself in contention, THAT'S when you pop for a closer. And even then, it should probably be a rental to keep the costs somewhat reasonable.
It will be interesting to see who gets moved from the 40 man to make room for Frazier. Perhaps Samad Taylor, maybe Marsh. It now seems highly unlikely that Massey makes the 26 man roster come opening day. It's possible the Royals want Massey in Omaha to work on some things or maybe he becomes part of a trade package. When the rumors broke the Royals were looking to add a third baseman my first thought was that would be bad news for Massey.
Regarding your thoughts on Massey...Getting to Omaha to work on things is, to me, a best-case scenario and probably what the Royals are looking for when making this deal. A little competition can be a good thing.
I have a hard time getting behind the signings of Hampson and Frazier. I feel like it takes AB's away from Massey, Loftin, Blanco, Waters, and Taylor. I am a believer in finding out what you have before bringing in more expensive journeymen to fill the role. Our offense may not be fantastic but with a lineup that will in some order be:
Witt Jr.
Garcia
Vinnie
Salvy
Velazquez
Renfroe
Melendez
Isbel
We have room to stomach learning what a Loftin and Massey can be at the plate and in the field. And frankly, I've seen enough of Massey/Witt Jr. up the middle to really like their potential to grow together. They turn some amazing DP.
I would have rather taken the 4.5 from Frazier and 2 from Hampson and signed another reliever. We can always flip relievers at the trade deadline. JMO
I hear you, but they do need some depth. I’m not adverse to bringing in either Hampson OR Frazier, but I just have a difficult time seeing how both fit on this roster. Unless it’s some sort of left/right super platoon. It feels very Old Royals, but with just enough of a twist that I’m intrigued to see how it all shakes out.
I agree with you on the Witt/Massey DP combo. Those guys were fun to watch and they clearly have an understanding of each other.

We are of the same mind. Except for the Bellinger part. :)

If Vinnie goes for a closer, we riot.
