A few more notes on the Bobby Witt Jr. contract extension. Plus, an early look at playoff odds, Zack Greinke still wants to play and there's some meaningful baseball being played in Florida.
Thanks, Coach. I really think Greinke can be an asset if he's managed properly. And I think Quatraro and the way he's open to juggling the staff can pull it off.
Phantom years on the back end of a contract are infinitely cheaper than hard dollars on the table to build a stadium. The present value of what Sherman is on the hook for is a fraction of the headline value they're selling. It'll earn Sherman plenty of hearty backslaps at the next owners' meeting.
Zack Greinke can still pitch. He still has the ability to out finesse hitters. He had a lot of bad luck last year and many games he kept the score close. Last year I watched every game and he would be almost out of the inning and he would give up a two out hit. Which he never did that much before. He is still better than half the pitchers in baseball. He is still the best fielding pitcher and hitting pitcher in the game. When he was with diamondbacks and first year with royals a lot of times he never got the run support he needed. He has always been a hard luck pitcher with his teams not scoring runs behind him. He is very valuable pitcher against young hitters in the league facing him for the first time. He would even be a great reliever to start an inning to get three outs. These baseball executives sometimes look at numbers and don't go back and watch the games he pitched. Stupid not to give him chance after how long he has pitched and so close to strike out record.
Like the Cleveland model from the 90s. With Vinnie as Jim Thome?
Checks out. Maybe. Worth a look!
Love the Cleveland comparison - good point CB. And like you, see the same spot for Greinke - let's hope it comes to fruition!
