I’ve updated the post to include the info from Anne Rogers that Vinnie has a broken right thumb and is expected to be out six to eight weeks. Just awful news for Vinnie and the Royals.

Forgive me, but we Kansas City sports fans have known

all along that things have been going too smoothly,

that there was another shoe that would drop, sometime.

Well, it has. So now this is not only character-test time

for "the boys," but also for us.

We must send our love and nothing but positive enery.

Meanwhile, we curse the Baseball Gods and tell them

to go to hell, knowing full well they call the shots there,

also.

Anne Rogers is reporting it’s a broken thumb for Vinnie with a 6-8 week recovery time. That basically puts him on the sidelines for October. Terrible blow not just for the team but for Vinnie.

If there’s any good news to be had, it’s that the Royals are in a good spot to make the postseason. They just have to stay steady. Still…this is an awful development at the worst time. For player and team.

Reminds me of the time Ken Harvey hits Jason Grimsley's face with a throw to home. Nothing beats the Royals and their pitcher-first baseman hi jinks.

Nooooo!

Why not Joe McGuff?

If I have one gripe with Q, it's his love affair with Schreiber. There was no excuse for him to walk that batter in the 8th.Groove one down the middle would have been better than that BB. You could not let Hader get into that game.

That’s one of those moments where your family thinks you’ve lost your sanity, yelling at the television, “CHALLENGE HIM!” I just didn’t understand the pitch selection there. Go outside with a 1-2 sweeper and then bust him inside with a four-seamer. See how the rookie likes that.

It occurs to me that Salvy was at 1B at that point. He moved there and Fermin came in to catch after Vinnie was injured. I know Fermin has been great and his defense is a huge part of that (though he's been a little shaky of late in terms of blocking pitches), but I would MUCH rather have Salvy behind the plate, calling the game and managing the pitcher, in that situation.

Idk, that collision at first seems really soft. I’m not sure how anyone breaks anything by someone running into your hand. Super weird. But hoping for the best for both of them.

Broken thumb and out 6-8 weeks per Anne Rogers.

It’s about the angle of the thumb and the movement of the arm at the moment of impact. Looks innocuous, but it’s awkward. And that’s how a thumb gets broken or a wrist gets sprained.

Since you posted this, the team announced Vinnie has a broken thumb and it looks like he's done for the rest of the year.

All hope isn't lost, though. Salvy can move to first and Fermin can become the primary catcher. That's the better defensive alignment for this team, anyway.

A bunch of mediocre hitters got dropped on waivers. The Royals surely can get ONE of them to fill in as a DH/OF/1B. None will be Vinnie, but they might be close enough to keep things going. While they wait for the waiver claims to go through, I expect Austin Nola to be recalled.

This is the correct take. Vinnie's injury doesn't actually hurt the Royals as much as you might think (and once again I'm proven wrong in my early-season suggestion to trade Fermin).

I'm much more worried about the possibility that Erceg is going to miss significant time. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE John Sherman, give JJ the OK to put in a waiver claim for Taylor Rogers.

I would expect the Royals are sweating the waiver wire big time at the moment. Rogers would be a guy and now the need is there for a bat. Their record may prevent them from landing the top players available.

There are also probably some hitters available that haven’t been reported. Going to be a very interesting afternoon to see how the Royals cover this. Definitely Salvy at first for most of the reps. They need to find just a bat that can be league average down the stretch to keep the lineup productive.

Is that Fescoe talking? The idiots on the station FKA 610 AM kept talking about that this morning - I heard them say it before I switched to a podcast on my way to work, and they were still talking about it 30 minutes later when I unplugged my phone. (as an aside: how do we have so many stations devoted to sports talk in Kansas City and none of them are bearable to listen to in the morning?)

I had to look it up because obviously those geniuses didn't: he has a sparkling OPS of .691 in 20 games with the High-A team in the Quad Cities. Like 99.99% of all players, he needs time to adjust to professional baseball.

Let’s not compare anyone here to Fescoe. Nobody deserves that comp.

Also my life advice is to never listen to sports talk radio.

Last time I heard Fescoe, ( this is YEARS ago ) he was ranting & raving because the PECOTA ratings had come out, & they weren't favorable to the Royals. He was going off about Bill Pecota being in "his mother's basement" ( dumbass comment red flag! ) & not knowing what he was talking about. It took me a few seconds, but I soon realized he literally thought BILL PECOTA WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE PECOTA RANKINGS. I couldn't turn the station fast enough, & I wish I was kidding.

With Vinnie out It would seem Pratto will get called up.

I’m not sure about that. Pratto has never impressed in his time up here and is scuffling this season in Triple-A. I think there are a number of guys on the 40-man ahead of him at this point.

I would think it’s Salvy at first base and Fermin at catcher for the time being

Most definitely. The question is, how do they want to rotate when Salvy goes back behind the plate. Quatraro has done a really good job managing the time between Pasquantino/Fermin/Perez. Ideally, they find someone who can handle first in a pinch so they can just kind of adjust the rotation.

Not a huge drop off there

There are no great options. They can call up Nola but he has been far worse at the plate than Pratto. Alexander has been raking but he doesn't play first. He could slot in at DH but that leaves Salvy as the everyday first baseman and considering how the Phillies exposed Salvy's lack of range this past weekend that doesn't seem to be optimal. Frazier could play some first maybe. The one thing for certain the Royals are going to miss Vinnie

Loftin has played a little bit at first. A little. He could be someone they call up to be the emergency guy there. Alexander feels like a very long shot to me given how overmatched he looked at the plate earlier this summer. Not super keen on Nola up. They don't need to do that if they have a first base option they're comfortable with beyond Salvy. Also, the rosters will expand in a couple of days, so there is a little luxury there.

Expand full comment

I agree. Unless the Royals go outside of the organization it would seem they have four choices. Alexander, Lofton, Nola or Pratto. I am not advocating for Pratto, but if he is not the teams first base depth player then why is he on the 40 man roster?

Losing Vinnie's bat is an issue, but at least some of the other guys have picked up lately, especially MJ. And, by moving Salvy to 1B, Fermin gets to play more often, which isn't a bad thing.

Maybe someone can talk to Vinnie about being a human Pasquatch, and go with the guy who walks on the HOF building?

Maybe there will be an interesting bat and/or 1B on the waiver wire this week?

I was just talking with my Brother about the Moose and Gordon collision an hour before this happened....how it was the first step of a spiral downward that lasted till this year. Gordo never recovered from the wrist injury....I was worried V had broken his wrist and was relieved to hear it was the thumb. in my 50 plus years watching MLB I have never seen a pitcher barehand a hit...i think Ercig was not aware of the situation...and instead reacted... too bad.

Go Royals!
