I would love to see a discussion about traditional baseball stats versus sabermetric driven stats. I believe that both have merit, yet the saber driven group seems to have taken over. For example, obp is valued higher than ba, yet no runner advances to third on a walk. OPS is valued more than RBI, yet actual runs scored is how games are one. Would Mike Trout produce more runs in the 3 hole, because he bats more often with runners on base? Or do the additional ab's generate more runs over the course of a season? I don't know, but I believe it can be measured by someone as passionate about the game as you Craig.

Appreciate the compliment, Gary. It's an interesting topic, especially given the direction the game has taken the last couple of years. Not sure I'm the right guy for that, given the complexities of some of the advanced metrics, but may take a crack at it.

"There are lies, damned lies, and statistics" --Benjamin Disraeli. I also have questions about defensive stats. I get UZR, as it will bear out over a large sample size. But how do you calculate DRS? I believe that it can be calculated better if you just used 90 feet at a time, with subtractions for errors (two base errors would be worth 180 feet) and some calculation for how many additional pitches you cost your pitchers to replace that 90 feet.

I have a scenario from the glory year defense of 2015. A speedy hitter leads off for the opposition, he lines a ball down the left field line, but Gordon cuts it off and holds him to a single.

The runner stays close because he knows Salvy will throw behind him. No great secondary lead means that the next batter's single to Cain in center holds him at 2nd instead of 3rd.

The third batter rolls one up the middle. Escobar dives, gets up, steps on second, and throws low to first. Hosmer digs it out.

Runner at third, two out. Next batter lines one to the gap in RC. Cain runs it down, diving to add flair to my story.

No runs score. Who actually is credited for DRS? Every piece of that scenario is vital. Defense works together. Yet you could count for how many 90 feets were saved.

I need to go back to work now. I have too much time on my hands.
