Good analysis on Davis and I agree. I talked about this a little in my post as well, but I think this is a bit of a different situation from Holland and Rosenthal. Holland was coming off a rough second half in 2019, but he showed at least early on he could be effective for a short period of time with the Diamondbacks, and he was starting to change his arsenal a bit during that time (going more wiht the slider, less with the fastball). Rosenthal was coming off surgery and recovery for about a couple of seasons, but there were signs that his velocity was back to where it was during his Cardinals days. There were some optimistic signs on both guys and it paid off.
Davis feels a little different. Not only has he been getting shellacked, but the velocity is worrisome. While I credit some of it to a wonky 2020, his 2019 was pretty bad as well, and he's been dealing with nagging injury issues too the past couple of seasons. I like the move and it's a low-risk, possibly high-reward kind of deal (he's a name, so if he can recapture anything, he could be a trade asset much like Rosenthal a year ago). However, so much is banking on his velocity returning in 2021. If it's not, it could be a longshot for him to make the bullpen in 2021, especially since it is a bit deeper than it was a year ago.
Not sure how much tread Davis has left on his arm.
I think he's been signed and invited to camp to help mentor Junis and Duffy on the transition from starter to dependable reliever. I know Duffy is slated as a starter but we all know his health isn't going to permit that from happening. If the young arms in the organization are as promising as what we saw with Singer and Bubic last season, Junis and Duffy had better adapt to a new role or be forced to go away.
