I think with managers, they need to have support of the organization from the jump so that means at least a two-year deal. Especially a first time manager. I was kind of surprised when the Angels said they were bringing back Nevin, but on a one year contract. My reaction to that was, “So he’s still an interim manager.”
It feels like there are so many qualified candidates out there that if they don’t get their top choice, they should be able to get 1A.
My top 3 in no particular order (yet) is Pedro, Quatraro, and Wathan. I’d like to hear more about Wathan’s analytics use, (same with Pedro). If I was JJ, I’m looking for a person who can run a clubhouse like Ned, but incorporate the analytical side (with a plan for next year’s changes, and the willingness to grab someone like Brian Bannister for the pitching side.
I’m intrigued by Bannister coming back and how he could head up a pitching lab. That’s kind of the thing with these candidates...we can’t say for certain how they will mesh with an analytics department. Kind of the great unknown of this process.
