The Royals are draft lottery losers once again. Plus, they're in the mix on at least one intriguing free agent and the snoozefest of the Winter Meetings comes to a close today with the Rule 5 draft.
One idea I saw was to keep the bonus pool in accordance with records even with the lottery. That would help ameliorate what happened to the Royals while still discouraging tanking.
I saw that, too. My concern there is that could result in some weird spending. Last year, the difference in slot money from pick number 2 to pick number 6 was around $2.5 million. That’s sizeable.
Maybe a percentage of the pool money can be made available?
"I realize this sounds like a sour grapes kind of post." This idiot typist sez you can sour grapes all you want so long as you include your excellent analysis and even more excellent writing.
Also, spending that kind of dough for a Giolito sickens me, but the Royals are where they are.
The loudest hint will come as they get closer to figuring out their self-inflicted stadium issue and he realizes there’s even less support than their polling showed. The $30 million available for free agents is promising. It’s a start. There’s still a ways to go.
Can the Royals really complain? As you mentioned in 2 of the past 3 years they have gone under slot anyway. It seems the strategy is to pass on a 55 grade player with the potential of a perennial all star in order to have more certainty in acquiring 45 grade players who one day may become a low leverage relief pitcher.
I think moving out of the number two overall pick is a pretty big deal. The gap between two and six can be rather large, so I would like to think that if they were picking second, they’d grab the best guy on their draft board and not mess around with slot money at that point. There would still be enough money to monkey around in later rounds.
I didn't know the specifics of the conspiracy, I mean lottery pulls. Those are some incredible coincidences. Maybe instead of being bummed about it, I can weave some incredible theories to entertain myself while waiting on Royals next acquisition.

All I want for Xmas is my two front starters.
Thanks, Terry. Hell, at this point I’ll settle for just one starter. It’s a tough market out there.
Disappointed. But mostly because I don't trust Sherman to take the hint that maybe he should spend more on the roster.

The Royals need to spend some money, draft better, and stop whining.
In other words, they need to win. :)

It’s crazy how this process played out. It’s as if they held it on the sixth floor of a book depository building. Or in a NASA sound stage.
Yes I agree. But I saw an opportunity to vent about one of my Royals pet peeves and took it. Lol
I understand and encourage it!
