Vinnie is the most frustrating guy in the lineup for me (which I hate, because I really love Vinnie). He can’t hit right now which is obviously a huge problem because of he’s hitting right behind Bobby. He hasn’t really looked the same since his injury last season.
I was really encouraged by Massey’s 3 hit game last night. We REALLY need him to produce and provide a solid middle of the order bat.
I know Makiel has cooled off a bit, but I’m still really encouraged by his start. I don’t need him to be a .300 hitter, but if he can hit like .260-.270 and be solid, then I’m perfectly happy with that.
I remain convinced that Massey can be a servicable guy. Not an All-Star, but a solid, everyday regular. And I'm with you on Garcia. I just don't have the kind of faith in him.
Vinnie is the most frustrating guy in the lineup. But he's been frustrating to me for the last couple of years. I know the injuries have played a huge part in that, but I'm wanting just a little bit more. This year, though, I want a lot more. The Royals offense was good for five months last year, because he was basically an RBI machine. He needs to go back to at least doing that.
I’m not at all worried about Salvy, even though I’ve heard some others say that they are. With his expected numbers being so good, I feel like it’s only a matter of time before those bad luck plays start going his way. He’s also had multiple hits that could be homers with better weather/less wind, so I think he’ll be fine.
The Royals just have to look across the field to see what they should do. Granted, last year when they dumped a lot of players & called up replacements, Detroit intended to punt on the season, but what happened? The young guys knew there was accountability, the replacements played like their hair was on fire, there was enthusiasm--they refused to lose. I have no idea what would happen if Melendez, Renfroe, Biggio, and Stratton were released and four guys called up from Omaha, but it probably wouldn't be worse than what we see now. If the only thing you learn is that those four guys from Omaha don't have futures in the MLB, then fine. At least you're accomplishing something.
They also lost Baéz to an injury, which was addition by subtraction.
Just focusing on the offense, we've kind of seen what is in Omaha when the Royals called up Waters. He was deserving of the call given how he started, but I think we can close the book on him. Who's next up? I suppose Nick Loftin would be if based on performance. John Rave could get a look, too. I completely understand the "they couldn't be worse" sentiment, but at the same time, are they going to be better? Worth finding out I suppose, but at that point, the team is just going in circles.
Charting all the bad at bats, missed pitch calls, blown scoring chances. bad breaks, etc. etc. etc.
became so depressing it was abandoned.
Made me channel Marvin Gaye, "Makes me wanna holler, throw up both my hands."
Really makes this idiot typist marvel at 2024 and ask if the Baseball Gods didn't bestow a lot of karma, good fortune or whatever you want to call it on this team, and now they're taking it all back.
Cements my opinion that Baseball Gods can be mean mofo's.
There are very strong odds that I'll be working a Marvin Gaye reference in at some point in these games against Detroit.
Good teams need some good luck. The 2024 Royals weren't an offensive juggernaut by any stretch, but they could sequence together some good plate appearances to get on base and keep that line moving. This team has too many black holes at the moment. They can't be this bad. Or can they?
I’ve harped too much on the offense. In frustrating times frustrating things happen. Hence Zumwalt of all people gets tossed. I’d personally like to see him tossed permanently. My fear is we wasted Water’s talent. I would sure hate to see Water’s and Melendez flourish with another team/system. Like another said here, maybe baseball karma came to visit the Royals last year and has left the building. It’s hard for a team like the Royals to compete with Mets, LAD, NYY. At least for talent.
I get the fear that comes with cutting a player loose and watching them find their groove. Ryan O'Hearn in Baltimore and Brent Rooker in Oakland/Sacramento are two recent examples. Both could point to failures in coaching because something clicked once they moved on. Although Rooker didn't get much of a look here.
If someone can rescue Melendez that would be an all-time turnaround.
Me too. Remember Melendez led all of baseball in home runs a few years ago albeit in the minors. Something is there. Maybe it’s changing his position messed with his mind, to much on his plate. When we got rid of Rooker I thought no way. And yes, way 😧
I mean, I'm going to quickly give up on games where the Royals get behind until they start proving to me they can win them, but I'm not giving up on the season.
On the replay on the double steal...am I crazy or did it look like Bobby tagged the runner on his hand before his other hand touched the base? I thought replay screwed that up, and then the denied challenge was icing on top of it. I was hoping Q would escalate his argument and get tossed. I don't really think that helps much, but at least he might feel better for a minute.
I thought Bobby tagged him. The Detroit broadcast thought so, too. But you know...clear and convincing. We need replay to get the calls right, or so I've been told.
Q was ejected like three times last year and I'm positive all three were appreciated in the clubhouse. Was kind of surprised he didn't get run there, too.
IF. IF they can pull it together and qualify for the postseason after such a horrific start, this will garner a lot of votes for one of the best Royals season ever. Ain't sayin' it ain't possible.

Reading back over this comment, apparently I’m very encouraged!😂

Agree. Sal is the one guy in this lineup I expect to turn it around. I can't say that about everyone else.
Whatever happened to Vinnie's vaunted plate discipline & swing decision?
Oh, there's a lot going on. He's actually swinging less frequently, but he's missing a lot more that he has in the past.

Completely agree with all of it.

I can't give up, yet. I just can't.

Far too early to give up. Especially in this division. Besides, what else are we going to do with our time?
