The Royals accelerated their rebuild this offseason and have had early success. Now they need to consolidate those gains into something that can carry them through the rest of the season.
Couldn’t agree more. I believe some internal moves now would inform us more regarding potential deadline moves from outside the organization. Waters, Mann, and Pennington seem the best bets to me also. But I wonder if JJ would send MJ down and also relegate Massey to more of a bench role for Mann
I'm a bit more sold on Massey at this point if only because his presence minimizes Quatraro using Frazier and/or Hampson. Plus, the defense at second is really good. I'm really thinking Melendez needs to head down for some reps.
I don't expect a lot from Waters, but you're correct. It's got to be better than what we're seeing from MJ and Velasquez. Those two need to go pound some AAA pitching to remember what it feels like to hit. Can't do much about Renfroe yet except hope he figures it out--like, today, if possible. He wasn't great last year but you still don't expect a 32-year-old to go from a 98 OPS+ to...this in one offseason.
Agree on Renfroe. My expectations were already kind of low, but the production he's brought to this point? Brutal. His BA dropped a point over the weekend and his slugging went down six points. How is that even possible?
I'm on board with sending MJ and Nelly down for some intensive coaching and I agree with bringing up Waters and Mann. That said, I wouldn't make either move if I didn't plan on them playing every day. At 27, it feels like Mann either comes up this year or should be traded - he's not likely to get much better than he is now unless he gets a shot in the majors.
The clock is definitely ticking on Renfroe and Frazier and, to a lesser extent, Hampson. None of them has earned his roster spot, much less his salary.
I'm curious why you're less interested in Nate Eaton. Are you assuming he's a AAAA guy - solved AAA pitching but will never get to a MLB level? I'd open to using him in a bench role replacing one of the vets.
Agree on bringing guys up to play every day. Or at least as regular as Quatraro would play them based on how he rotates the lineup.
As for Eaton, I do believe he's the quad-A type of guy. I can't stop thinking about how executives and players around the game are talking about the gulf in talent between Triple-A and the majors and how it's as wide as it's ever been. We're going to see a few more guys with gaudy Triple-A numbers who can't quite get on track in the big leagues.
Felt hopeful after reading your article, until I looked at todays lineup with MJ, Renfroe, AND Velazquez on it. Kind of surprised no one has been sent to Omaha yet. Wasn't there some sort of managers discretion benching of Waters not too long ago? I wonder if that is the holdup.
I know Salvy is unbreakable, but not having Nola in the wings would make me nervous. Unless there is another kinda ready catcher I forgot about?

The further along we get in the season, the more obvious it is the Royals have to make some moves to bolster their roster.
Logan Porter is still around. He could be a break-glass-in-catching-emergency guy.
I don't know much about Devin Mann but I love his last name.
I understand that...
