I think that's what most big league players would do in that situation but in a sense, that's thinking scared and I don't believe Bobby has ever shown any indication that any of this scares him.
The first-level thought in that situation is "I want to get a big hit and win the game."
Taking a pitch and hoping a pitcher with control issues gives you a walk is kind of a second-level thought - "as awesome as it would be to get a big hit and win the game, if this guy can't get the ball over the plate, I should let him give us a gift."
The third-level thought is, "this guy is struggling with command so he's probably going to try to get something over the plate and when he does, I'm going to crush it." Lesky did a cool bit of analysis that showed Brebbia loves to throw first-pitch sliders in that exact location. Bobby knew it, and was ready to pounce.
Thanks for that. Very interesting analysis. I wasn't thinking that deeply. I was just having a beer and enjoying the moment. I am glad Bobby did what he did.
All the people two years ago--including me--who thought the Royals should explore trading Witt to a team with a strong farm system (aka Dodgers) for 2-3 top prospects look pretty foolish now!
Was SO hoping BWJ would take a pitch in that spot.. Only mere mortals need do that.
Massey came through just as I was about to recommend Peter Pan for the leadoff spot.
All the heroics aside, only the Sox could've blown this one.
PS-LOVE "clutchiness". You da wordsmith.
The Sox provided the opportunity. That’s what bad teams do. Bobby grabbed it. That’s what a great player does.
Amazing.
Bobby is playin some ball!
Indeed. Elevate!
When Bobby came to the plate I thought ok Bobby just be patient and take the walk if they will give it to you. Lol

Man, did he crush it.

I hear you. When Massey got on I got so excited, and then when Bobby did his thing.... My wife loves making fun of me for being such a little kid.

Brings to mind the quote from Tombstone, after the shootout at the creek. To paraphrase: "Where is Bobby? Down by the creek, walking on water."
Go Royals!
