We have faced a lot of tough pitchers the last 6 games. But that will be the case in the playoffs too, if we can get there.
I'm reminded of a Christmas Story quote.
"Oh, life is like that. Sometimes, at the height of our revelries, when our joy is at its zenith, when all is most right with the world, the most unthinkable disasters descend upon us."
Your point about the WC race being a war of attrition is so dead on. The roughly 75% chance the Royals have of making the playoffs according to the algorithm seems about right to me; they COULD still blow it but it would be a shock, because no matter how many we lose we can reasonably expect the Red Sox to also lose their share. They aren't very good, which is helpful since. right now at least, the Royals aren't very good either.
The bright side: I'd much rather go through a team-wide slump right now as opposed to 3 weeks from now. They have time to right the ship and get ready for the WC round. It feels like the only way they win the division at this point is to win these next 2 against Cleveland and then hope their (Cleveland's) overworked bullpen stumbles down the stretch.

The Astros series in particular was rough as far as starting pitching goes.
First place felt good for a moment. They should do it again.
